Ever heard of a market on railway tracks? Yeah, it’s a thing in Bangkok! This tour is to the Damnoen Saduak and Maeklong Railway Markets. It’s like a peek into the everyday life of the locals. The railway market is such a unique experience – you’ve got trains passing through while sellers swiftly move their goods away from the tracks. And Damnoen Saduak is this vibrant floating market where you can glide through canals, checking out the stalls. Sadly, not all the food is vegan but there are some tasty treats to be found.
A Brief History of Green Curry
Green Curry, known as “Gaeng Keow Wan” in Thai, has its roots in Central Thailand but there’s not a lot of information to say exactly where. Its signature vibrant green colour comes from a blend of fresh green chillies, Thai basil, and other fragrant herbs. Traditionally, it’s made with a mix of proteins, including chicken, beef, or fish, simmered in a creamy coconut milk base. The result is a perfect balance of spicy, savoury, and slightly sweet flavours that keep you coming back for more.
Making Thai Green Curry Vegan Friendly
To transform this classic Thai dish into a vegan masterpiece, we can make a few simple swaps. The traditional animal proteins are replaced with plant-based alternatives like tofu, tempeh, or just some extra tasty veggies, if you’re happy to get your protein elsewhere.
Some recipes use vegan fish sauce or some other alternative to fish sauce and vegetable-based broth to capture the authentic flavours. The richness of coconut milk remains intact, providing that creamy texture we all love in our Thai Curries. With these small adjustments, a tasty vegan green curry can easily be enjoyed.
But when visiting Bangkok, the recipes aren’t your problem, you just need to know where to get your hands on the best vegan green curry in town. I did the extremely enjoyable research and it’s time to share the results.
The Three Best Spots for Vegan Green Curry in Bangkok in 2024:
1. May Kaidee
Vegetarian and Vegan Restaurant in Bangkok
Location: Find May Kaidee on Google Maps
A long-standing vegetarian restaurant near Khao San Road, May Kaidee is known for its authentic vegetarian and vegan Thai food.
I’ve visited here many times and tried a lot from the menu. Just be careful because some things are vegetarian but it’s easy to order vegan food here. I’ve even joined one of the May Kaidee Cooking School classes. And when I visited Chiang Mai, I searched for their branch there too. Next on my list is to try May Kaidee when I visit New York again.
I love so much of the food on their menu, but the vegan Green Curry is one of my favourites. It’s creamy, yet not too heavy and it’s got tofu, mushrooms and an array of tasty vegetables. It’s clear why this place has a reputation for its delicious and authentic Thai flavours. Sometimes the service can be a bit slow, but just relax because the food will be well worth it.
May Kaidee is a must-visit for vegan Green Curry enthusiasts in Bangkok.
2. Veganerie Concept – Benjasiri Park
Vegan Restaurant in Bangkok
Location: Find Veganerie Concept on Google Maps
Nestled behind the serene Benjasiri Park, Veganerie Concept is an absolute gem that has been serving incredible vegan dishes since its opening in 2016.
As I entered this oasis-like restaurant, I was greeted by an extensive menu that included not only traditional Thai dishes like Green Curry but also Western food, Japanese food and smoothie bowls. As well as a delicious selection of vegan desserts including waffles, sundaes, and more.
The Green Thai curry and the Green Papaya Salad were my favourites. The flavours in the Green Curry are rich and creamy with plenty of depth. For me the portion size was good but if you’re feeling pretty hungry you might want more than just this dish.
Not only is the food delicious here but it also comes at a reasonable price. This spot is must must-try for anyone in search of a vegan Green Curry experience in Bangkok.
3. Aroi Vegetarian Food
Vegetarian and Vegan Restaurant in Bangkok
Location: Find Aroi Vegetarian Food on Google Maps
Aroi Vegetarian Food, a small and casual cafe, offers really good vegetable and mock meat dishes that are not to be missed when visiting Bangkok!
While the food is prepared in the morning and sits covered throughout the day, don’t let this put you off. If you go here, you’ll enjoy some of the best Thai food you’ve ever had.
The vegan Green Curry was the winner for me! It had a good spice level with plenty of flavour, I find spice can sometimes be lacking in other places. And if you know me, you know I love my food with a bit of spice.
I’m not going to lie, I also liked the more than fair prices and the super kind and friendly staff. Oh, I’d eat here most days if I could, don’t miss out!
