Are Smarties Vegan? Let’s Dive In:

So, let’s just answer the question outright, no Smarties are not vegan. The ingredient list includes milk powder, butterfat, milk whey and beeswax, so they are no good for us vegans.

Are Smarties Vegetarian?

Yes, Smarties are vegetarian, the problem ingredients are milk and beeswax, which are an issue for vegans but fine for vegetarians.

Is There a Smarties Alternative for Vegans?

YES! There are vegan alternatives to Smarties.

I’m always saying vegans don’t need to miss out and this time it’s no exception. I’ve found a tasty vegan alternative to Smarties. Yes, that’s right dairy-free Smarties for us vegans to enjoy.

Doisy & Dam – Vegan-friendly Smarties

These plant-based crunchy sugar-coated Smartie alternatives from Doisy & Dom are more than just vegan-friendly, they’re also ethically sourced with no artificial ingredients or palm oil. Whether you’re vegan or not they seem like a good idea to me.

You can buy Doisy & Dam – Dark Chocolate D&D’s on Amazon.

What Ingredients are in Original Smarties?

According to Sainsbury’s, these are the ingredients found in Smarties:

Sugar, Skimmed Milk Powder, Cocoa Mass, Cocoa Butter, Wheat Flour, Butterfat (from Milk), Lactose and Proteins from Whey (from Milk), Rice Starch, Emulsifier (Lecithins), Colours (Beetroot Red, Carotene, Curcumin), Natural Flavouring, Spirulina Concentrate, Glazing Agents (Carnauba Wax, Beeswax White), Fruit and Vegetable Concentrates (Safflower, Radish), Barley Malt Extract

Far too many mentions of milk in there…

What About Smarties in Other Countries?

If you’re in the United States, Smarties are different. They’re the classic chalky candies that look a bit like tablets and I’m glad to say they are vegan. But be careful when you read Smarties are vegan because that’s not referring to the chocolate ones.

Do Smarties Contain Artificial Colors?

Nestlé says that there are no longer any artificial colours or flavours in Smarties, find out more about what they say.
